A small plane slammed into the front of the California Highway Patrol scales shortly after 6 p.m. today, killing the pilot, according to Gilroy Fire Battalion Chief Phil King.
The crash shattered windows and sparked a small fire inside the building, spewing thick black smoke that could be seen for miles.
But it could have been worse. CHP officers spent the day in the building training, but everyone left about 5 p.m., said CHP Assistant Chief Troy Abney.
"Ironically today was training day," he said. "Man am I glad it was closed today."
