The Christopher High football team trailed host Palma by single digits in the second half, but couldn't get over the hump, losing 28-12 in Salinas on Friday night.

We were excited walking in and excited walking out,” CHS head coach Tim Pierleoni said. “It wasn't a win, but it was a good for the kids.”

A little trickery in the early stages of the first half kept CHS close 7-6. Running back Rayshon Mills played quarterback in connecting with Brian Delgado for the touchdown in the first quarter.

A turnover aided in the accelerated the Chieftains in taking a 21-6 lead into the locker room. It was 28-6 when CHS starting quarterback Sterling Montgomery found tight end Jake Moen for a touchdown to bring the Cougars within nine points.

“We felt like we played with them,” Pierleoni said. “I was really pleased with how our young kids played and how the size of the moment didn't get to them. We walked into their homecoming and they didn't step down a bit.”

The CHS (1-5 overall, 1-1 MBL) defense forced three turnovers in the second half, including a Raul Tovar interception.

“It was nice to see our defense step up,” Pierleoni said.

Full statistics were unavailable at press time.
