The right ball for your game
Oct 2, 2008
 By Don DeLorenzo

Going to your local pro shop and looking at the golf ball selection is like going down your supermarket's cereal aisle.

Which one do I buy? What ball is best for my game?

Well, many of you should NOT be playing with the ball the pros use. To start discussing golf balls, let's focus on the key factors of a ball: compression (how hard it is), durability, spin and trajectory.

Play a lower compression ball if you are a slow swinger, and a higher compression ball if you swing like Tiger. If you need distance, look at a distance ball. This ball will go a little further, but it won't have the soft feel around and on the greens. It will have names like hot, extreme or roll. If you want that feel, then go with a ball that will says "carry," "tour" or "bite." These will usually spin more and they have a softer feel around the green.

Most of you will ask, 'Does the ball really make a difference?' For some of you, the answer is no. But for most of you, the ball does matter. Ask your local pro behind the counter at your course. They are trained to know the difference between the balls and what would be right for you.

So play the ball that fits your style, not the style of the guy you saw on TV last Sunday.
