Time to let the hands go
Sep 25, 2008
 By Josh Koehn

OXNARD, CALIF. - Randy Guerrero took up boxing to follow in the footsteps of his father and brothers.

If he wants to take the exact same path of one of brother in particular, two-time IBF champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, he'll need to start claiming titles on a national level. An amateur national champion in the novice, open and senior divisions, The Ghost set the bar like it was a pole-vaulting competition.

The 125-pound Randy Guerrero doesn't see punching his own ticket to a title outside his reach.

"Match him, be better him," Randy says, "just win one myself."

The patriarch of the Guerrero family, Ruben, who trains both brothers, is just as confident.

"We're going all the way," Ruben said. "We're gonna win it."

Robbed by the scorecards at the PAL State Championships in August, according to Ruben, Randy will be fighting seven pounds lighter for this next week's event, which runs from Monday until Saturday.

Randy Guerrero won't be the only Gilroyan fighter in attendance, though.

Elizabeth Rodriguez, 14, will be trying to add to her resume after winning the state title she won two months ago. Competing in the 100-pound division, her trainer and father, Jerry Rodriguez, thinks she has an excellent chance considering how hard she has been training and the reputation she'll be bringing with her.

"I think she retired all the fighters in Northern California," he says. "She has a good chance. She's been training real hard, watching her weight."

The only thing for the two fighters to do now is let their hands fly.

The sponsors for team Silver and Black Boxing Club that will be helping Randy Guerrero to the PAL National Championships include: South County Rockery, Pacific Coast Bail Bonds, Handmade Health Care, South County Chrysler and Gilroy Billiards. The Guerreros would like to thank all of them for their support,
