Mustangs fall in five
Aug 26, 2008
By Josh Koehn - GHS Volleyball

Gilroy tried to stand tall in the face of its mistakes, but Mt. Madonna's varsity girls volleyball team proved to be too resilient to fall.

As a result, the Hawks were able to pull out a five-game victory over the Mustangs in Gilroy Tuesday evening: 25-14, 25-27, 25-13, 22-25, 15-12.

"We're young, but we're getting there," Mt. Madonna coach Gabby Neville said. After losing six of the eight players that led the Hawks to a Division V state title last season, Neville thinks her club will "surprise a lot of teams" this season.

The Mustang players may not have been surprised by the challenge they received from Mt. Madonna, but Gilroy coach Sue Grogan was by the effort and organization she saw on the floor.

"We're having issues," Grogan said. "They need to figure it out. They're playing varsity for a reason. They need to come together as a team."

Grogan declined to provide her players' individual stats after the game saying, "Right now, they need to be a team and understand that the individual part is not important."

Mt. Madonna improved to 2-0 on the season through solid performances by Soma Sharan (13 digs), Allison Ota (nine kills), Anneka Lettunich (13 kills) and Erin Mitchell (23 assists). Gilroy dropped to 1-1 after defeating Monterey in its first game of the season last week.
