Coconut explodes for Fourth of July victories

Team Coconut outlasted JR's Crew 10-7 Friday to earn the 36th Co-Rec Fourth of July Softball Tournament 'B' Division title at Las Animas Park.

Ryan Dequin and Memo Lopez hit home runs and Sara Hewitt doubled and singled as the Coconuts went 4-0 in the eight-team double-elimination event. KC Adams homered for the Crew.

JR's Crew fashioned a four-game winning streak after falling 10-4 to the Coconuts in the Thursday night opener. Erika Campbell scored three runs and Lopez homered as Coconuts sent JR's Crew into the loser's bracket.

JR's Crew opened Friday's action with a 16-6 nod over Do Work. Vanessa Pena scored three runs for the Crew. Cherise Martinez stroked two hits to help the Crew past Sandlot 9-2. Daniel Salinas and Paul Garcia each went 3-for-3 as JR's Crew topped Hit it 12-1 in the quarter-finals. Salinas hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to help the Crew past NorCal Regulators-Pacific Coast Bail Bonds 8-5 in the third-place game.

Team Coconut reached the finals with an 11-6 win over NorCal-Pacific. Bobby Reggiani posted a two-run single in a seven-run first frame for the winners. Joel Vaca went 3-for-3 for the winners.

Gamers In Control went 3-0 to take the seven-team 'C' Division title. The Gamers completed the sweep with a 13-0 blanking of Batters Up in the finale. AJ Martinez homered and tripled. Gamers powered past the Troopers 20-2 as Joel Robinson stroked four hits. Ernie Payan homered for the Troopers.

The Gamers posted a 13-10 win over Fun Fer All to reach the finals. Danny Pequeno scored three Gamer runs and Steve Aguirre drove in two runs. Alex Rodriguez and Roger Hernandez each netted four hits for Fun Fer All.

Sean Subia, Andrew Ornelas and Kenny Hopf each belted three hits as Batters Up upset Fun Fer All 11-8 to reach the finals.

Batters Up left the Hackers with the fourth-place award with an 8-3 conquest. Ornelas homered for the winners. Clint Wheeler went 2-for-3 for the Hackers.
