Spartans Take Two of Three from Sac. State
Apr 24, 2007

Staff Reports

San Jose - San Jose State University won two of three Western Athletic Conference baseball games from Sacramento State over the weekend.

Donato Giovanatto had a double and three RBIs as the Spartans edged the Hornets 5-3 Friday. Marcus McKimmy and Kyle Bellows each had three hits and an RBI, and Greg Shannon boosted his record for SJSU to 5-1.

Steven Vidal pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with nine strikeouts Saturday and the Spartans erupted for four seventh-inning runs in a 5-1 win. Giovanatto again had a double and three RBIs. McKimmy, Bellows, Sonny Garza and Justin Santich-Hughes each had two hits.

The Hornets outlasted SJSU 11-8 in 12 innings Sunday. Brian Yocke had half of the Spartans' eight hits, going 4 for 6 with two RBIs and two runs.

SJSU is now 24-17 overall, 5-7 in WAC. Sacramento State, which snapped a seven-game losing streak, is 11-29 and 6-12.

Local Wrestler Takes First

Jasmine Hernandez, 13, who attends South Valley Middle School, took first place in the California Girls Middle School State Championships recently held in Vallejo. She wrestled in the 104-pound class.

Herndez placed eighth in the nation in the USGWA Woman's Wrestling Nationals on April 1 in Livonia, Mich.

The All-American qualified by placing in the Santa Clara County Championships in December.

Blast Charts New Waters for Orchard Valley Soccer

For the first time in decades, a local Orchard Valley soccer team has advanced to the State Cup semifinals.

The Orchard Valley Blast, a boys under-14 team led by coaches Richard Mussallem, Sergio Herrera and Jorge Sanchez, completed the regular season with their highest finish in the CYSA District II, Abronzino, Division A.

In tournament play, the Blast endured only a loss to the Nevada state champions. The Blast is currently competing in the semifinals of the California Youth Soccer State Cup competition against the Santa Clara Sporting team.

The team members, Forrest Alvarez, Daniel Amaro, Justin Cordeiro, Kyle Dunne, Victor Garcia, Paul Jensen, Michael Galvan, Jose Lopez, Sahand Rahsaz, Alex Salvatier, Armando Sandoval, Jorge Sanchez, Daniel Stuart, Christian Turnlund, Kristian Urias and James Walker, contributed to victories over Fresno Roosevelt, Marin F.C., Lamorinda, Santa Rosa United and MCFC Salinas Select.

The players, all from Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy, played for local junior high and high school teams. The success of the players are directly attributed to the years of training by Herrera, a product of Live Oak High School, whose efforts include on-field training and off-field counseling.
