Local victim of 'do not dismount' postal policy speaks out
    Jun 7, 2005

    Dear Editor,

I too was a victim of "Do not dismount" by the United States Postal Service of Gilroy after I moved into my home here. However, I didn't realize why I wasn't getting mail one day a week until the day I noticed the postman pushing my garbage bins with his truck.

I commented to my neighbor and she said that's happened before and the mail may not even be delivered if the bins were in the way. She also told me a different neighbor had called the main office about it, and that subsequently the postman went to her door and berated her for getting him in trouble.

I called and talked to the postmistress who said what we all know now - that they are not to dismount. I asked her what ever happened to "the mail must go through," but just got a slight chuckle for an answer.

If indeed this rule continues, the homeowners should at least be notified and "Do not park" areas should be painted on the street, which sounds almost as ridiculous as the rule itself.

    R.L. McPherson, Gilroy
