Should the City Council lay off eight police officers to balance the budget or use reserve funds to keep them on?

■ Difficult question ... I say neither. Have all the police officers take a cut in pay.

■ Reserve funds or administration but we cannot afford to lose more police officers.

■ According to Police Chief Denise Turner, Gilroy has OVER 900 gang members. Now is not the time to cut back on our police force, we should be adding to it. Go into the reserves.

■ Salaries are recurring costs. The reserve fund can be used up quickly with salary costs. Tough one, but lay off until times economically are better.

■ Use reserve funds and keep the cops. A lay-off is a guarantee for increased gang activity.

■ Neither. We need the officers. Has anyone thought to suggest a temporary pay cut across the board so people can keep their jobs?

■ Use reserve funds. Safety is a priority, and often times there is an increase in crime during economic downturns.

■ Tough question. Use the reserves. If it was fire services, I would reconsider but with all the gangs and graffiti, we need every officer on duty.
