Prop 2 column way off base, farmers can raise chickens right
Oct 6, 2008
Dear Editor,
The "city girl" who learned everything that she needed to know about Proposition 2 by talking to two chicken farmers is sadly misinformed.
Hens kept in battery cages are miserable creatures who must have their beaks cut off so they don't peck each other to death. Furthermore, Prop 2 does not require that egg-laying hens be cage-free, and the banning of battery cages in Europe has resulted in the development of more humane types of cages for these animals, which balance animal welfare with economics.
Surely if the European Union can manage this, California farmers can, too.
Most importantly, as a physician, I know that sacrificing food quality and safety in the name of "cheapness" endangers the health of all of us. That's why I'm voting YES on Prop 2.
