Should the city of Gilroy have passed a budget for next year that cancels the annual citywide fireworks show for budgetary reasons?

■ As unAmerican as it sounds, yes. I think, since there are 17 nonprofits receiving financial support through the sale of fireworks, they should kick in at least $500 each.

■ Yes,sadly if it's a choice between this and other recreation services. Here's an idea: Cite and fine all those who shoot off illegal fireworks and you would have more than enough to pay for a city event.

■ NO. Council needs to find ways for local non-profits and individuals to help finance it.

■ No, but maybe they should put up a safe and sane fireworks booth to help pay for it (ha, ha!)

■ No. Our lives continue to be 'cut back' and we need community events.

■ No, too premature. Cancel the Council retreat.

■ NO … they should keep the citywide fireworks in the budget but also be more proactive in securing private funding to expand the display in quantity and quality and, at the same time, encourage families to watch the citywide show and forgo fireworks at home.
