Good list on district's termination - here are a few more questions Dear Editor,
You are absolutely correct that questions abound following Gilroy Unified School District's personnel action against Mr. Lyons, and I want to know the answers, too. We have precious few financial resources at a time when the state is asking all school districts to slash budgets. How can any one of us justify forking over nine months additional pay to an employee who is clearly no longer working for us?
More questions for your list:
Is there a bona fide medical necessity for Mr. Lyons to be on medical leave for exactly nine months? - Has a valid doctor's excuse been provided to GUSD that would allow the district to place him on paid medical leave to the tune of $120,000?
- If not, WHY?
I find it most suspicious that the medical leave so neatly coincides with the personnel action, and it reeks of something improper. Public employees should not reap the benefits of paid leaves of absences, medical or otherwise, when they are not performing adequately. Period.

Hard to fathom GUSD paying him $120,000-plus for not working
Dear Editor,
How can Mr. Michael Lyons resign and still get paid $120,000 by the Gilroy Unified School District until he finds a job?
He is getting sued related to his former position at the Stockton Unified School District, plus he must have lied on his application or during his job interview.
GUSD reportedly will not fill that post, so that means a burden on the rest of the staff without any incentives or wages for after-hours projects. Have him stay on the job and do the right thing.
Daniel Rhodes, Gilroy
