Little to No Handicapped Parking Downtown
Jan 13, 2007

Downtown Handicapped Parking

"I have noticed a lot of money has been put out for the traffic patterns and parking lots and everything for the beautifying of downtown, but I've been down there numerous times lately and there are no, hardly any, handicap parking.

(Handicap spots are) in the old Penny's parking lot, so I guess people who are handicap have to walk twice as far from the center of town, and the people who are healthy they can park right in front of the stores.

I guess that's how they designed it and wanted it. I was just curious why they set it up like that and why there is no handicap downtown or little or no handicap downtown?"

Red Phone:

Good caller, Red Phone contacted city engineer Don Dey who said there will be permanent handicap parking, but not until the road is resurfaced and then restriped.

"We are working on restriping parking spaces to include handicap parking, what we are planning to do because of the construction, was to resurface the street and put down permanent stripes so it looks new and clean," Dey said. "New handicap parking will be included in restriping, somewhere near the mid-block crosswalks and in front of businesses."

Resurfacing requires warm weather, Dey said and the city is hoping for some higher temperatures in February. Until then the city plans to keep all spaces in front of businesses fair game.

Perpetual flashing

"I'm curious about the light at Wren and Third; is it going to flash for a long time? You may have already run something on this for the other folks but they spent this money and I'm sure it's bothered other folks. I'm just wondering why they're not functioning? They were only on for about two weeks functioning."

Red Phone:

You are right caller, Red Phone has run a column addressing the concerns of numerous other callers about the continuous blinking light at Third Street and Wren Avenue.

City Engineer Don Dey gave an update based on conversations between city engineers and the contractor in charge of this project, and they have identified the problem. Dey said the contractor thinks it can be done within the next couple of weeks if weather, parts and other things don't delay the process.

Update on Long's door:

Red Phone asked for an update if any, from the city fire prevention team after further inspection. A member of the fire prevention e-mailed a letter to Fire Marshal Jackie Bretschneider after inspecting the site Wednesday. After inspection, a report was submitted to the store manager stating that all sliding doors are required to be maintained operable during business hours. The problem door was operable from the exterior but not the interior and labeled "not an exit".

"I explained to the manger that the sliding door has an exit sign and therefore is required to be maintained operable from both the exterior and interior," according to the fire marshal in an e-mail. "The manager is aware that the exit may be maintained closed but with approval from this department and he is aware of the 11:30 meeting slot that is available for this Thursday to discuss the exit issue. At this time all three sliding doors are operable as required."

The manager was also made aware that if failure to maintain all sliding doors operable during business hours may result in citations. Thank you, good caller, for helping your city officials maintain safety.
