Pacheco Pass closed again next week

Gilroy - Pacheco Pass will be partially closed overnight between Gilroy Foods and Llagas Creek for a third week for striping and safety improvements.

The road will be narrowed to one lane each night at 10pm from Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 6. The road will be fully open each morning by 6am.

Celebrate all Gav has to offer at GavFEST

Gilroy - The whole community is invited to enjoy the second annual GavFEST on Saturday, April 30, 10am to 3pm at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

This free spring festival is a celebration of family, fun, and community. Admission and parking are free. Support student clubs by purchasing hand-made wares, snacks and beverages. GavFEST Live will be cablecast on Channel 18 from noon to 2pm on that day. The Gav Cafe in the student center will be featuring their trademark Breakfast Burritos and a food court with a variety of offerings from local restaurants will sell tempting alternatives for lunch and snacks.

This year's GavFEST has been made possible by community sponsors: Greenwood Chevrolet, Wells Fargo, Gilroy Chevrolet and Cadillac, The Gavilan College Educational Foundation, Obata Farms/Tom Obata, Giacalone Electric, Washington Mutual, and Anritsu

A glimpse into Gilroy's historic past

Gilroy - Members and friends of the Gilroy Historical Society will learn more about Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson and the summer home home she built in 1902 at the end of Redwood Retreat Road, west of Gilroy.

Sunday, May 1 at 2pm the Society has been invited to tour the home and hear local historian Elizabeth Barratt speak about Vanumanutangi (Samoan for Vale of Singing Birds) and the nearby Frank Norris cabin.

Flower lovers celebrate 80 years

Morgan Hill - The Morgan Hill Flower Lovers' Club will be celebrating its 80th anniversary with "The 80th Anniversary Flower Show" on Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1 at the Morgan Hill Community Cultural Center, located at the corner of E. Dunne Avenue and Monterey Road, from 11am to 4pm.

There will be a flower show, plant sale, bake sale, tea-room, raffle demonstrations, entertainment and white elephant sale. Admission is free and all ages are invited to attend.

Discover Indian culture in San Juan

San Juan Bautista - The 21st annual "California Indian Market and World Cultures Festival" will be held from 10am to 7pm Saturday and Sunday in the San Juan School lot on The Alameda in historic San Juan Bautista.

Discover award-winning American Indian and world artists, crafts, food, music and more. Patrick Prescod on steel drums, the Amah-ku-Tura California Indian Dancers, Quitus - music of South America, the San Juan Intertribal drum and singers and Xipe Totec Aztec dancers and drum will be among those featured.

Everyone's invited to literacy carnival

Gilroy - All are invited to MACSA's Family Literacy Carnival on Wednesday, from 5 to 7pm at the South Valley Junior High School Cafeteria. With a Cinco de Mayo theme, there will be food, games and entertainment from the Kinder Academy.

Spend Mother's Day at Casa de Fruta

Hollister - Casa de Fruta and The Craft Fair are pleased to announce the 11th annual "Mother's day Weekend Art and Crafts Fair" at the Casa de Fruta Train Station area, from 9am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8. Admission and parking are free. Casa de Fruta is located off Highway 152, jut 15 miles east of Gilroy.

Discover an array of arts and crafts vendors including, jade and pearl jewelry, beadwork, Native American jewelry, wind chimes, plant hangers, hand-woven purses, hats, tapestries, bone jewelry, candles, beaded suncatchers, baby blankets, needlepoint, clothing and much more. Live music will be presented by Mike Knapp of North Fork, who will be playing a wide variety of folk, country, oldies, bluegrass, ballads of the old west, Christian and mountain music.

Crab feed benefits GHS athletics

Gilroy - The Gilroy High School Athletic Association will hold the 25th annual "Crab Cioppino Feed and Dance" on Saturday, May 7 at Don Christopher Ranch, 305 Bloomfield Road. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 8pm, followed by dancing from 8 to 11pm.

Ages 21 and over are invited to stuff themselves with crab and dance to the sounds of the band Shaboom.

Tickets are $50 each. T-shirts with the 25th anniversary design are available for $10. Purchase tickets at Gilroy High School between 8am and 4pm or online with your Visa or Mastercard at www.gilroyhighschool.com.
