The City Council unanimously approved $87,941 Monday night to create handicap accessible ramps near the Gilroy Museum in central Gilroy and new sidewalks near Eliot Elementary School in east Gilroy.The improvements will entail creating new sidewalks, gutters and curbs that will allow handicap access in the Eliot Elementary School area and will place ramps at intersections on Fourth and Fifth streets. The projects, which will be built by San Mateo-based JJR Construction, will be funded through state and federal grant money.
"The engingeer's estimate for this construction was roughly $165,000, so once again we got a very good bid for this project," said Transportation Engineer Don Dey.
The project, which will start in mid-January, should be completed by April but could be delayed due to rain, Dey said.
Neither council members nor members of the community commented on the matter Monday.
Intersections that will be affected for the central Gilroy project are near intersections at Fifth and Hanna, Rosanna and Church streets, and at the intersection of Fourth and Church streets.
Improvements near Eliot School will be at Old Gilroy and Chestnut streets and on Eighth Street at Forest, Chestnut and East streets.
The Eliot Elementary school project will be funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant program, while the project on Fourth and Fifth streets will be funded by state money, Dey said.
