Hollister crime: Former reporter recovering; men accosted outside 7-Eleven

Woods leaves hospital 3 weeks after wreck

Former Pinnacle reporter Kate Woods was discharged from a hospital Saturday three weeks after a single-car accident in southern San Benito County left her in critical condition, according to a spokeswoman for Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

At about 11:30 p.m. Oct. 17, Woods drove a 1995 Mazda Miata off the road at Panoche and Recaldi roads. The vehicle turned over, and she was ejected from the car, according to the California Highway Patrol. She was airlifted from the scene after the CHP found her unconscious on the roadside.

She had been listed in critical condition for nearly two weeks before being upgraded in status to serious condition, according to the spokeswoman, Leslie Kelsey.

As a longtime reporter for the Pinnacle, Woods was known for her coverage of local government and a weekly column called "Report from the Badlands."

Two men assaulted by group at 7-Eleven

Two Hollister men were arrested for a fight at Hollister's 7-Eleven store last week, according to a press release from the police department.

Two victims reported that five or six suspects assaulted them around 2 a.m. Oct. 31 at 7-Eleven, 915 San Benito St. in Hollister. The group yelled gang slurs and repeatedly punched and kicked the victims while they were on the ground, according to police.

Officers arrested two men, ages 20 and 23, and booked them into the county jail. The younger man was arrested on suspicion of felony battery after a witness had identified him as being involved, according to police. The second man was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest after he had led police on a short foot chase. Other suspects fled prior to officers' arrival, according to the statement.

Neither of the two men had been charged by prosecutors as of this afternoon, according to court records.
