Police investigating attempted robbery in Safeway parking lot

Police are trying to identify a man who attempted to rob a 46-year-old female in the parking lot of the Safeway grocery store at 810 East Dunne Ave.

About 5:49 p.m. Friday, police responded to a call from the victim, a San Martin resident. A male about 19 years old approached the woman and demanded her purse when she was walking from inside the store to her car, which was parked on the west side of the store, facing Walnut Grove Drive, according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer. The woman threw her purse inside the vehicle and quickly entered the vehicle and closed the door. The suspect hit the car with his hand and ran southeast on Walnut Grove Drive.

After the suspect was gone, the uninjured woman entered the store to call police. Police responded and attempted to find the suspect, who is described a black male, about 5-feet, 6-inches tall and thin, with an afro style haircut.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery can call Morgan Hill police at 779-2101, or the anonymous tip line at 947-7867.

Halloween brings flurry of DUI arrests

Morgan Hill police arrested 11 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol throughout the Halloween weekend, according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

Four of the DUI suspects were arrested Friday night, and seven were arrested Saturday night. Neumayer said the weekend DUI tally is significantly higher than the average weekend, when the number of such arrests rarely reach double digits. Halloween festivities likely contributed to the heightened occurrence of impaired drivers on local roads.

"There were a lot of parties going on, and there was a lot more alcohol flowing at bars and clubs," Neumayer said.

Morgan Hill police did not conduct any sobriety road blocks or special operations to nab the DUI suspects. All 11 arrests resulted from routine weekend patrols, Neumayer said.

Men arrested for mining poppy jasper

Police cited two men from out of town for illegally excavating for poppy jasper rock on public property.

Sean Stewart, 45 of San Bruno, and Russell Kaniuth, 41 of Sunnyvale, are accused of digging for the rare rock that is used for exotic jewelry at Silveira Park, in southwest Morgan Hill, according to police.

They were cited for violating a county ordinance prohibiting excavating on public property Oct. 8 about 10:30 a.m.
