A Salinas man who crashed his pickup into a fire hydrant while trying to flee from police in downtown Morgan Hill was arrested early Sunday morning.A Morgan Hill Police officer attempted to make a routine traffic stop on a Ford pickup truck driven by Charles Lintern, 31, about 2 a.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.
Instead of stopping, the driver led the officer on a "short pursuit," Neumayer said. The pickup truck lost control on east Fifth Street and ran over a fire hydrant on the curb. Lintern exited the vehicle and fled.
He was arrested about 2:20 a.m. when officers saw him running through a residential yard off Fifth Street.
"He was jumping over fences, trying to hide," Neumayer said.
Lintern was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, failure to yield, hit and run, resisting arrest and vandalism, according to Neumayer.
The damage to the fire hydrant caused water to flow uncontrollably onto the street. Public works responded to turn off the water shortly after the incident, Neumayer said.
