Grass fire contained

A four-acre vegetation fire in Coyote Valley is contained but not yet under control.

Engines from the San Jose Fire Department, Calfire, Santa Clara County Fire Department, Milpitas Fire Department, and personnel from California State Parks responded to the grass fire about 2:50 p.m. Thursday. The fire started on Silver Creek Valley Road, near Fontanoso Way and Percy Road.

The cause of the fire is unkown, according to Capt. Barry Stallard of SJFD. He said by about 4 p.m. the flames were mostly extinguished with some areas still smoldering.

The blaze burned about four acres of mostly light vegetation, and was the equivalent of a tier 3, or "three-alarm grass fire," according to a supervisor at SJFD.

The area where the fire started, about 15 miles north of Morgan Hill, is surrounded by vegetation and park wildland.

Calfire's South County station sent engines, helicopters and air tankers to battle the blaze, according to Stallard.

Some structures are near the fire, but were not burned and are not in danger of burning, Stallard added.
