Take a trip through music and dance

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15), the Gavilan Theatre Arts Department presents Fiesta Mexico, a journey through music, song and dance at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Saturday Oct. 4, at the Gavilan College Theatre, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Fiesta Mexico is an elaborate production of Mexico's vibrant dances and lively music, and features a cast of more than 55 dancers, singers and musicians.

Fiesta Mexico supports the College Theatre Arts Department. Proceeds from the production benefit the Theatre Arts Department drama club.

General admission tickets cost $15, seniors and students are $12. Tickets are available at the theatre box office or call 846-4973.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation will award $1 million this year to help provide food, shelter and other basic service. The grants will be the first issued under new strategies for the community foundation's endowment, which will provide $8 to $10 million in the coming year to address the most challenging problems in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

The community foundation will focus on five key areas: economic security, immigrant integration, education, regional planning and a new community opportunity fund that will give grants to "safety-net" providers and offer seed money for innovative ideas.

The new strategies grew out of an extensive process that involved input from hundreds of community and government leaders, academics, grantees, donors and residents.

The first requests for proposals are being issued now. Later this month, the community foundation will hold information sessions for potential grantees.
