Gavilan holds staff development day, services limited

Students registering at Gavilan College will have to go online to sign up for fall classes until school starts Wednesday. For help registering online, students may call (408)848-4733. Students were able to register in person all summer.

The campus was closed Monday for Labor Day and registration and admissions are closed today for a staff development day, according to the college's Web site.

The training day takes place every year before the start of school, said Gavilan spokeswoman Jan Bernstein-Chargin. She acknowledged that the limited services can cause confusion but that students are still able to register online and will have ample opportunity to register once school starts.

The training day will bring the faculty and staff up to speed and are held the day before classes begin to accommodate employees who only work 10 months out of the year.

"Unfortunately, there are people that don't get the word," Bernstein-Chargin said of the students who showed up to register in person. "We tell the students to please not wait until the last minute. But don't worry, there's still another last minute."

Late registration will be available, in person, Wednesday through Sept. 9, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The bookstore, however, is open for business today and students are able to pick up their books during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, staff said.
