Cooling centers open
Aug 27, 2008
 By Sara Suddes

Cooling centers open throughout Santa Clara County today in response to triple digit temperatures that will sweep South County for the next two days.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for the greater Bay Area until Friday afternoon. Inland temperatures are expected to creep past 100 degrees on Thursday and won't relent until Saturday.

NWS advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors periodically. County officials also suggest that people avoid liquids containing alcohol, caffeine or excessive sugar, cool off in public areas like libraries, malls, movie theaters or community centers, wear light-weight, loose-fitting, breathable clothing and limit outdoor physical activity. Never leave pets or children in closed, parked cars.

For more information, call 2-1-1 or visit www.211scc.org to view cooling center locations and tips for keeping cool.
