In the print edition only: Mt. Madonna student gets into prestigious art program

Mar 26, 2008
 By Sara Suddes

Luis Rivas, 17, a junior at Mt. Madonna Continuation High School, stands below two of the nearly ten ceiling panels that he painted in his art class. Rivas uses a variety of media to make his creations, including spray paint, water color, latex paint, ink, house paint and markers.

Luis Rivas, 17, works on a painting inspired by his old girlfriend outside his art class after school at Mt. Madonna Continuation High School Thursday. Rivas has been seriously involved in painting for the past two and a half years and received a merit scholarship and additional funding to attend a two-week pre-college Chicago Arts Institute program in the summer.

Luis Rivas, 17, sleeps on the couch these days. He has to now that stacked canvasses and art supplies have taken over his bedroom.

The Mount Madonna Continuation High School junior's dark clothing, scuffed black Converse sneakers and shoulder-length black hair stand in stark contrast to the vibrant colors and bold strokes of his art. With few outlets here in Gilroy to showcase his striking art, he'll be jetting off to the Art Institute of Chicago this summer to network and test his talent against the big boys.
