Update: Police said raped woman was 18

An 18-year-old woman was raped while sitting in her vehicle in north Gilroy, police said.

About 7 p.m. Monday, the woman was idling near the intersection of Leavesley Road and Forest Street, according to police. A man then came up to her and raped her.

Police did not specify whether the incident occurred in the car or in the area near where the car was idling. Police also did not specify whether he had a weapon or where he went after the attack. Police also did not release whether the woman was from Gilroy.

Witnesses described the man as about 25 years old, 5-feet-6-inches and 140 pounds. He had a buzz cut and a bruised or swollen left eye. He wore plug earrings and black clothing and had a pierced tongue.

The sexual assault was not in the incident log when collected Tuesday or Wednesday and police put out a press release until late this morning. The incident was reported to police Tuesday, but Sgt. Robert Locke-Paddon said he did not know why information regarding the incident was not made available that day. Detectives could have been waiting for the sketch to be finished, he said.

Police did not return phone calls immediately this afternoon.

Anyone with information on the incident can call Gilroy police at 846-0350 or leave an anonymous tip at 846-0330.
