Time to Reflect

At Saint Mary's, the current buzz word is "Five Ones." Fr Robert, our pastor, has talked and written about this several times. The idea is to provide some structure for intentionally deepening, growing, and maturing our faith through five weekly one hour dedications: one hour of prayer, one hour of study (scripture, theology, methods of prayer, etc), one hour of reading toward deepening faith (reflection or meditation books, scripture, etc), one hour of service, and one hour of pay toward the financial well-being of the parish.

Again, and Again, and Again

“Just Do It,” says the Nike campaign ad. I imagine a room full of clever people—copywriters, editors, graphic designers, advertising executives—tossing out ideas rapid fire, searching for that one short, punchy, memorable statement that captures the imagination and the essence of the brand, and they did it; they gave us—Just Do It.

Personal Blog: Craig Lore

Recently, a running friend sent me an article about recovery. I have only read a part of the article so far, but I didn’t need to read that much before I realized that what I was doing was OK, which was—not running. The article, in plain language, simply states that nobody, and that means no-body, can sustain a running habit 365 days a year without taking time to recover. And, further, it insists that at least some of that recovery time should consist of not-running.

Costumes and props are amazing—fabric, cardboard and papier-mache. They'll be performing it again at 3 p.m. August 30, 31 and September 1 in San Juan Bautista and in Dunne Park in Hollister on September 6 and 7. Kudos to a great local theater troupe!

A Rich Diversity

People who attend our local Catholic parish have noticed that Saint Mary is a very diverse group of Catholics. This is only fitting, as Catholic means universal. We can view practices from different cultures as a rich blessing from which we can learn or we can resist and think “What are they doing to MY Mass/rosary/holiday.”

Personal Blog: Marc Perkel

If you're a victim of a crime it's worth going to court during the sentencing. I had a drunk crash through my fence at high speed. He plead guilty but under "Marcy's Law" I was allowed to speak as a crime victim to the judge. As a result the perp was given a far harsher sentence that they would have if I hadn't spoke. The judge in Morgan Hill court thanked me for speaking out.

Sip and Spit for Winemaking Students

A brand new, California bill would let winemaking students under 21 taste their work – called the “sip and spit” bill. The measure passed a key Senate panel Tuesday and is headed for the Senate floor. It passed the Assembly in May. Holiday Weekend July 4th

During this long 4th of July weekend, please keep your cats indoors-only, and keep your dogs indoors as much as possible, too.  If you take your dog out, please keep him on a leash.  Firecrackers (the “safe and sane” legal version, or the illegal varieties) make a lot of noise, and most dogs and cats are very stressed by the noise.  So please keep them indoors, so they don’t panic, run away and become lost.
